Background Information
George Clooney (Hollywood actor) and Rande Gerber (Entrepreneur), after selling their Casamigos Company, which was five years old, to British alcohol giant Diageo, still thirsted for more. They sold the company in 2017 for $1 billion, and on April 1, 2018, they expanded the range of Casamigos by launching the Casamigos Joven Mezcal.
Story Behind The Name
The name Casamigos is Spanish, casa (house) and amigos (friends). The company initially produced only tequila brands that the three long-time friends (George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman) created to drink without a hangover. They came up with the idea while in a bar and had taken different brands of tequila but could not get one that satisfies them.
So, they decided to create their own tequila, which would be perfect for them; a brand that must not be covered up with salt or lime. They also had no intention of making money out of it, but to serve it home and share with friends.
Journey To Success
They earned a seal of approval in a short time, and Casamigos tequila became the super-premium brand in the US. It happened that they ordered as much as 2000 bottles in a year, and the distiller claimed that the number was too large to be labelled as samples, and that it could call the attention of the Mexican authorities. At the point they had no choice but to launch the Casamigos publicly.
For two years they were doing research to develop the blend, and for another two years, they were drinking it for surety of quality.
Years back, before the launching, the three friends, George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, had been given different mezcals by a family in Mexico to try, and there's a particular one that they loved. So they decided they would make it part of Casamigos someday.
The Casamigos Mezcal is made by a family of Mezcaleros who has been producing mezcal for four generations in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca in Mexico. The three friends have since stayed in touch with this family to produce an improved brand of Mezcal, Casamigos Mezcal.
Casamigos are currently on sale in the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Bahamas.
How Casamigos Joven Mezcal is Created
Harvesting
Casamigos Mezcal is made from 100% Espadín agave. These particular species take about 8-9 years to come to maturity. The mature Espadín agaves are harvested first, and then the piñas (hearts) are split. Six-ton pits are built underground and aligned with volcanic rocks along the walls. The split piñas are then laid in the pits and are subjected to heat from the oak wood fire.
Cooking
The piñas are then cooked for six consecutive days, after which they are cooled for at least 24 hours. The next procedure is ton by ton crushing which is mainly done through a horse-pulled tahona wheel. Once the piñas have been fully crushed, the sugars are extracted.
Fermentation
The resulting mezcal is fermented for eight days and then distilled in covered copper pot stills. The Casamigos Mezcal is distilled twice. The distilled mezcal is allowed to settle and stabilize in 30 days while the team of Casamigos adds mountain spring water.
Aging
Casamigos Joven Mezcal is young, not aged, and has a clear crystal color. The mezcal's aroma is somewhat subtle. It has a scent of herbal and smoke, the fragrance of mango, mint, oregano, tamarind, and earthy.
Bottling
You can be sure to buy the finest quality since George Clooney and Rande Gerber taste each batch for approval. After this, the Casamigos Mezcal is directly bottled and is ready for consumption.
Gerber oversees the unique bottle design, which is crafted the old-school way. The matte-black bottles are hand-crafted then taken into a 1900 oven which makes the end result of each bottle unique. No two bottles resemble each other. Both casamigos tequila and mezcal contain 40% alcohol.
The spirit is easy to drink. Its smoky flavor and the black pepper lead to a long silky finish that will make you crave more. You can take it straight over ice or feel the smoky taste with your favorite cocktail.
How Casamigos Tequila is Created
Harvesting
The Casamigos tequila is made from 100% blue weber agaves, which have attained maturity between 7 -9 years. The agaves are grown in the rich red clay soil and cool climate of the Highlands of Jalisco in Mexico.
Roasting
After harvesting the fully matured agave, unlike mescal, the agave hearts or piñas are roasted in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours (many companies steam theirs for just 7 hours). The longer roasting process is what brings forth the deep agave sweet flavor.
Fermentation
The resulting liquid is then fermented for 80 hours, while other companies take an average of 48 hours. The longer fermentation process is the result of the subtle and complex flavor you feel while drinking Casamigos tequila.
Distillation
Unlike the commercial yeast used by other distillers, the Casamigos Master Distiller uses a special yeast blend, proprietary yeast, which gives the Casamigos tequila a refined flavor.
Aging
After the distillation, the tequila is aged for different time periods, resulting in Casamigos Blanco, reposado, and Añejo.
The Three Varieties of Casamigos Tequila
Casamigos Blanco
Blanco rests for two months in stainless steel tanks and is crisp and clean with a long smooth finish. It has hints of citrus, fresh apple, vanilla, and sweet agave. Casamigos Blanco is crystal clear in color.
Casamigos Reposado
This tequila is aged seven months in the finest American oak barrels. Reposado is soft, slightly oaky with a medium to a long smooth finish; golden honey in color. Has caramel flavor, with hints of cocoa and tobacco. The presence of black pepper is just something that refreshes the tongue.
Casamigos Añejo
This tequila is aged 14 months in the finest American oak barrels. It has various spices and succulents but maintains the agave's peppery palate. Añejo has soft caramel and vanilla notes with a refined, subtle aroma and a lingering smooth finish. Its color is rich caramel.
Whatever your choice, if you want to sip your tequila neat, pour it over ice, or drink it in a tasty cocktail, you will definitely want more of Casamigos Tequila.
